Worst Political Statements of 2015

By Yanay Rosen (Online Editor in Chief).

5: Bernie Sanders Attributes Terrorism to Climate Change

“Absolutely. In fact, climate change is directly related to the growth of terrorism.” The first statement, by Democratic nominee hopeful Bernie Sanders, is outrageous to some. Members of Sander’s own party, including the president, disagree. “Understand, climate change did not cause the conflicts we see around the world,” said Obama.

4: Rand Paul Insults Baltimore

“I came through the train on Baltimore… I’m glad it didn’t stop.”

Not only is Paul’s statement factually inaccurate, but it also offended many residents of Baltimore. As political commentators have pointed out, the train Paul claims to have taken always stops in Baltimore. Rand Paul’s position also disagrees with his campaign’s promotion of him as an ‘every man’.

3: Ben Carson Says That Joseph Built Pyramids

“My own personal theory is that Joseph built the pyramids to store grain,”

Although Carson first shared his strange archeological opinions in a recently leaked 1998 commencement speech, he says he still believes this. “The pyramids were made in a way that they had hermetically sealed compartments. You wouldn’t need hermetically sealed compartments for a sepulcher. You would need that if you were trying to preserve grain for a long period of time,” said Carson.

Egyptian Authorities say that Carson’s comments are inaccurate. “A lot of people are trying to prove that the pyramids weren’t built for burials. Maybe they’re comments used for publicity like that man who’s not an archaeologist and says they stored grain, and I don’t know what that was based on,” said Mahmoud Afifi, Egyptian Minister of Ancient Antiquities.

Junior Shalin Patel is confused by Carson’s comments. “I don’t know why he’s delving into archaeology. Or politics actually. He should really just stick to neurosurgery,” he said.

2: Obama Claims ISIS is Contained

The president’s unfortunate statements came the day before the ISIS orchestrated attacks in Paris. Three weeks later, ISIS carried out another terrorist attack in San Bernardino, California. Even before the two devastating terrorist attacks, Obama’s own military commanders disagreed with him. “We have not contained [ISIS],” said General Joseph Dunford, in a senate hearing the week before Obama’s statements. Ashton Carter, the Secretary of Defense, said he agrees with Dunford’s claims. “I agree with what General Dunford said, yes… The reality is we’re at war. That’s how our troops feel about it because they’re taking the fight to [ISIS] every day,” said Carter.

Junior Sam Hershman says Obama’s foreign policy is disheartening. “I have been greatly disappointed with Obama on several of his foreign policy blunders. It’s hard when you have a president who won’t even admit that we have a ‘radical Islamic’ threat yet alone claim we have ‘contained’ a terrorist organization,” he said.

1: Donald Trump Calls for End of Muslim Immigration

“Total and complete shutdown of Muslims entering the United States until our country’s representatives can figure out what is going on.”

Trump’s comments range from advocating registration of Muslims to calling all Iowans stupid. Junior Aidan Arnold says Trump’s campaign is frightening. “Quite frankly, it scares me that such an ignorant, blatantly inflammatory man might be the president of our country,” he said.

The Trump Campaign is predicated on using ‘political incorrectness’ to gain attention. Trump’s comments have elevated him to the pole position of the Republican primaries. NBC fired Trump for his derogatory comments. “At NBC, respect and dignity for all people are cornerstones of our values. Due to the recent derogatory statements by Donald Trump regarding immigrants, NBC is ending its business relationship with Mr. Trump,” said NBC in a press release. Univision also dropped Trump’s pageant shows.

Social Studies teacher Ms. Malcolm says that the US is very divided. “I think that we’re an incredibly polarized nation that’s really afraid, and no one’s speaking the truth to Americans and understanding what this country is all about,” she said.
