The Sharon High School Eagles defeated the Bellingham High School Blackhawks 40-26, improving their record to 2-8 this season. The Eagles will have a bye week before their final game of the 2018 season on Thanksgiving Day at 10:00 a.m. on the road against the Oliver Ames High School Tigers in Easton.

In the first quarter, sophomore running back Nick Marrero ran for a 10 yard touchdown. In the second quarter, co captain senior running back Aaron Strong ran for a 1 yard touchdown and a 74 yard touchdown. In the third quarter Marrero rushed for a 17 yard touchdown, Bellingham scored on a 6 yard run, and Strong had a 3 yard run. In the fourth quarter Bellingham scored a 1 yard rushing touchdown, followed by a Marrero 41 yard rushing touchdown. The Blackhawks then scored two rushing touchdowns from 21 and 22 yards out.

Senior kicker Mitchell Director converted 4/5 extra points and Sharon went 0/1 on two point conversions. Bellingham went 2/4 on two point conversions.

“It is a feeling that we have not had since the first week of the season, and it feels really good,” Strong said.

The offensive standouts included Marrero, rushing for 138 yards and 3 touchdowns, and Strong, rushing for 129 yards and 3 touchdowns. The defensive standouts included junior middle linebacker Johnny Sabb, 7 tackles, 3 assists, and 1 tackle for loss, and co captain senior defensive lineman Coleman Loftus, 5 tackles, 2 assists, and 1 tackle for loss.

This is the Eagles’ first victory since beating the Nauset Regional High School Warriors 7-6 in Week 1. The last time Sharon put up 40 points in a game was on September 12, 2009 when they beat the Randolph High School Blue Devils 48-13. The highest amount of points since then was 34 points against the Dedham High School Marauders and the North Quincy Red Raiders in 2012. They also scored 34 points against the Norwood High School Mustangs in 2017.

“Our offense has clicked, it feels good that we left school making history a little bit in some way, so that is kinda cool,” Strong said.

Since 2004, the Eagles have an embarrassing 4-13 record against the Tigers, but won four games from 2014-2016. In their last meeting, Oliver Ames was able to slip by with a 10-0 win on Thanksgiving, no points were scored until the fourth quarter.

The Tigers, sporting a 1-9 record this season, picked up their first win this season on the road this season against the Durfee High School Hilltoppers 13-7.

The Eagles and the Tigers are in a very similar spot this season. Sharon has not won a league game since their 2016 Thanksgiving Day game against Oliver Ames when they won 33-8 and Oliver Ames has not won a league game since the 2017 Thanksgiving Day game against Sharon. They are also last in their divisions in the Hockomock League. The Eagles are in the Davenport Division and the Tigers are in the Kelley-Rex Division.

“This win definitely helps our confidence, but it is a different team,” Strong said. It is a Hockomock team and they tend to be better than out of league teams, so it will definitely be a game, but we for sure could win,” Strong added.

The Eagles are 2-4 on the road this year with wins against Nauset and Bellingham. They have losses against the Ashland High School Clockers, the Milford High School Scarlet Hawks, the Canton High School Bulldogs, and the Middleboro High School Sachems.

The Tigers are 0-4 this season at home losing to the Silver Lake Regional High School Lakers, the Attleboro High School Bombardiers, the King Philip Regional High School Warriors, and the Mansfield High School Hornets.

“This win definitely helps our confidence, but it is a different team,” Strong said. It is a Hockomock team and they tend to be better than out of league teams, so it will definitely be a game, but we for sure could win,” Strong added.
