Eagles Fall in Last Division Game

The Sharon High School Eagles lost their last Davenport Division game against the Foxboro High School Warriors 17-8 and 1-6 on the season. They start non conference play on Sharon’s Senior Night this Friday on October 26th against the Brookline High School Spartan Warriors.

Foxboro scored first on a 15 yard pass and an extra point, but Sharon clapped back when senior co captain wide receiver Chris Gong not only rushed 2 yards for a touchdown, but turned a botched extra point into a successful two point conversion. Foxboro went on to kick a successful 30 yard field goal, and a five yard touchdown run and converting the extra point.

“We struggled to put together a full cohesive drive to score. We generally rely on a lot of big plays, so that is something we need to improve on,” co captain running back Aaron Strong said.

The offensive standouts included Gong, catching five catches for 63 yards and rushing for 2 yards and a touchdown, and senior wide receiver Brandon Buckman, catching six passes for 72 yards.

The defensive standouts included Gong, with two solo tackles with one assist, and an interception, and co captain senior defensive lineman Coleman Loftus and sophomore linebacker Ike Ogbonnanze, both with five tackles, two assists, and a tackle for loss.

The Eagles captured their first lead since Week 1 against the Nauset Regional High School Warriors when they won a thrilling 7-6 game. They lead this game at the half 8-7 in front of Patriots defensive end Derek Rivers.

Division 1 Brookline is 2-5 this season with wins against the Roxbury Prep Charter School Wolves and the Weymouth High School Wildcats. They have losses against the Newton South High School Lions, the Framingham High School Flyers, the Walpole High School Rebels, the Wellesley High School Raiders, and the Natick High School Redhawks.

Sharon is 0-3 at home this season losing to the North Attleboro High School Red Rocketeers, the Stoughton High School Black Knights, and Foxboro. Brookline is 0-3 this season on the road losing to Framingham, Walpole, and Natick.

In non conference games, the Eagles are 1-1 winning against Nauset and losing against the Ashland High School Clockers. The Spartan Warriors are also 1-1 winning against Roxbury Prep and losing against Newton South.

As of 2004, Sharon has not faced Brookline, so this gives the Eagles a rare fresh start during a season that has not gone right. For the second straight year, Sharon has not beat a Davenport Division team and lost seven straight games. If history repeats itself, they should be able to beat a tough Division 1 opponent to start the three game non conference schedule.

“We have watched a lot of film on them so we will definitely be prepared, we know what they are going to run,” Strong said.

“A lot of the time teams outside the [Hockomock League] are not as great, so we are a little more confident,” he added.

This Friday will also be Sharon’s annual Senior Night. They are expected to graduate sixteen players and their Director of Quality Control Matt Jacobson.
