Junior Marques Benton’s two magnificent goals fueled the Sharon Eagles to a 2-1 victory over the Canton Bulldogs.
With the win under the lights, Sharon secured their third win and improved to 3-2-2.
Benton’s first goal came in the first half as he bent in a corner kick. The ball curved into the upper corner of the net. He has never scored on a corner kick before and has never practiced, but says that he was “in the moment.”
“I didn’t really want to cross it so I took the shot,” the junior said.
Later in the game, the Benton broke a 1-1 tie with a beautiful chip shot from about 35 yards out. He punished the Canton goalkeeper for playing off his line.
“I saw some space, hit it with my left foot. I wasn’t really thinking…I just wanted to score and win,” Benton added.
Striker Oliver Hu says that the team did not play to its full potential, but somehow found a way to win.
“Marques bailed us out with some crazy magic,” striker Oliver Hu said. “We were lucky to come out with the win,” he added.
Sharon sits at the top of the Davenport division, with Canton close behind. The Eagles have scored nine goals on the season and have allowed eight.
